Cincinnati, Ohio, October 10, 2008 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 12 grants totaling $290,000 in September, including $25,000 for Adventures for Wish Kids’ Holiday Party Adventure and $10,000 for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine’s Med Mentors program. br>
Grants made in September:
Adventures for Wish Kids, $25,000.span> Holiday Party Adventure, a fun day for 500-plus children with life-threatening diseases and their siblings and parents. Volunteers find out a gift each on each child’s wish list, then shop for it, wrap it, and help Santa Claus present it at a party and dinner that include pictures with Santa, music, karaoke and games.
Assistance League of Greater Cincinnati, $40,000.span> Operation School Bell, a back-to-school program that provides school uniforms to children in need at 22 area public and parochial schools as well as other items such as clothing, hygiene supplies and duffel bags. More than 1,500 children are served.
CET (WCET-TV), $35,000.span> Support of children’s programming through a matching federal grant that will allow CET to enhance its digital encoding and editing capabilities, including production of multimedia curriculum kits for 500,000 students and teachers.
Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund (CISE), $60,000.span> After School Sports Program in conjunction with the Friar’s Club. Youngsters in kindergarten through the eighth grade at CISE inner-city school schools will learn respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership through their participation in sports activities.
Childhood Food Solutions, $10,000.span> Winter Break Food Sack Program, providing a two-week food safety net for over 1,000 low-income, school-age youngsters when school is not in session during the December holiday season.
Cincinnati Ballet, $5,000. Cincy Dance!, a collaborative effort between the Ballet and 13 local schools that provides free, long-term dance instruction to at-risk students in the community.
Houses of Hope of Glendale, $10,000.span> Support of the organization’s Gingerbread Contest, a program that brings children, teens, youth groups and families together for a bonding holiday experience and leverages strong volunteer to support to provide medical equipment for Cincinnati Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
Inner City Youth Opportunities, $35,000.span> Year-Round Tennis Program that combines tennis instruction with academic intervention and youth development to help inner-city children develop life and social skills and improve their academic abilities. br>
Mill Creek Restoration Project, $10,000.span> A Green Schools/Green Infrastructure program that provides Cincinnati Public School students with challenging, environment-based educational activities and hands-on service learning opportunities.
Muscular Dystrophy Association, $5,000.span> MDA Summer Camp, where children ages 6 to 21 with various neurological diseases are able enjoy typical childhood activities as accommodations are made for their illnesses and counselors provide assistance.
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, $10,000.span> Med Mentors, a program involving medical students who volunteer to mentor young people through outings to local cultural venues and special events that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.
Taft Museum of Art, $45,000.span> Educational outreach programs for children, families and educators, including Artists Reaching Classrooms, Youth Studios, Summer Art Day Camp, and professional development for the education staff. Most activities take place in the Taft’s Dater Education Room.
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.
