Cincinnati, Ohio, April 16, 2018 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded seven grants totaling $107,000 in March, including a $20,000 grant to Girls on the Run for scholarship support so that girls from low-income families can participate in its fall 2018 program and run.
Groups of girls meet twice a week for 10-12 weeks in schools and community centers. Each session combines running and walking with specific character development, life skills, and healthy living topics. Races are held twice a year to celebrate the girls’ successes over the course of the program. Girls get running shoes, a t-shirt, a healthy snack at each session, peer group support, the 5K experience, a team celebration, and tools that they can use to make healthy and positive decisions.
To encourage diversity among participants, the participation cost ranges from $10 to $160 and is based on family income. A Dater grant supported the scholarship subsidies.
