Dater Foundation Awards Nine Grants in January

Cincinnati, Ohio, February 10, 2013 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded nine grants totaling $117,500 in January, including a $30,000 grant to the Taft Museum of Art for a wide range of programs impacting children and families.

Grants made in January:

Mercantile Library, $2,500.  Children’s programs at the Books by the Banks Cincinnati USA Book Festival.

Cincinnati Opera Association, $20,000.  Program for Youth takes opera to over 40 schools where pre-K through high school students benefit from age-appropriate programming created andf performed by professional artists.

Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, $10,000.  Collaborative program with the Ohio Community Service Council and AmeriCorps to expand college access and mentoring to low-income students.

Coalition for a Drug Free Greater Cincinnati, $5,000.  Support of programs that gather and disseminate data and promote the availability of substance abuse prevention resources through organizations in local neighborhoods.

Gilbert A. Dater High School, $20,000.  Enhancement of the school’s current renovation project to provide courtyard benches and tables and other furnishings in indoor common areas.

Historic Southwest Ohio, $10,000. Support of education programs and increased outreach focusing on history and life in the 19th century for 6,000-plus young people in kindergarten through high school.

Salvation Army, $10,000.  West Side Youth Development Learning Center, which includes an early childhood as well as comprehensive after-school and summer programming in Price Hill and adjacent communities.  Children range in age from infants to age 12.

Taft Museum of Art, $30,000.  Educational programs for children and families, including school tours, Arts Reaching Classrooms, Third Sunday Funday, a Girl Scout program, and Summer Art Day Camp. Activities impact more than 8,000 children and many programs take place in the Taft’s Dater Education Room.

Urban Health Project (University of Cincinnati Foundation on behalf of Center for Community Engagement), $10,000.  Medical students spend their only open summer working full-time in internships at non-profit organizations, where they gain an increased understanding of the social factors that impact healthcare.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.
   
The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,200 grants totaling over $35 million since its inception in 1985.
