Scholarships for Graduating Dater High School Seniors

When no grant application was received by June 2023, the Foundation made a "renewal grant" for the program for which funding had been provided in the previous year.  For more information about the program, see the Grants Section of the 2021-22 Dater Foundation Annual Report on this web site and/or go to the grantee organization's web site.

No Grant Evaluation Report was submitted with results for the program.  This "Success Narrative" was submitted in November 2023.

Program Results:

The $50,000 grant from the Charles H. Dater Foundation to the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation was used to renew scholarships and award new scholarships for students with financial need from Greater Cincinnati obtaining higher education. Priority was given to applicants who graduated from Dater High School and who met the eligibility criteria. CSF reports that we received more applications from Dater High School during the 24-25 application season than we did during the 23-24 application season. We attribute this to outreach efforts we are making to the Cincinnati Public Schools. These scholarships positively impact the lives of these recipients by reducing student debt and allowing them not to have to work as many hours through employment so they can focus more time and attention on their studies.

As previously reported, when a new Executive Director took over at CSF arrived there was a surplus of funds in the Charles H. Dater Scholarship Fund due to recipients dropping out of school, no longer meeting eligibility criteria and graduating early throughout the years. CSF awarded the surplus funds which explains why you will see the total amount of scholarships awarded exceeded the $50,000 grant award amount.

Additionally, in 2022 the Greater Cincinnati Scholarship Association and CSF agreed that given the annual outstanding financial need of our applicants attending the University of Cincinnati, when factoring in the Pell Grant and additional state and school scholarships, ranged between $17,000 - $25,000, the historical award of $1,000 annually was outdated and no longer impactful. The decision was made that GCSA awards would range between $1,500 - $2,500 annually dependent upon the financial need of the awardees.
