MYCincinnati Summer Camp and Price Hill Creative Community Festival

Price Hill Will is a nonprofit comprehensive community development corporation serving the Price Hill neighborhoods.  Its mission is to revitalize the Price Hill neighborhoods, with a focus on physical revitalization, economic development, and community engagement.

MYCincinnati held its 2019 summer camp and culminating Creative Community Festival, both of which were completely free. Summer camp activities included daily orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, private lessons, elective classes, and a healthy lunch. Additionally, MYCincinnati's acclaimed Artists-in-Residence program engaged Mexican circus group BYDA Circo, pop artist Shara Nova, hip-hop artist Roberto, and performing artist and Cincinnati native Jennie Wright who co-created brand new performance work in collaboration with MYCincinnati students. These collaborative performance projects premiered at the camp's completion, during the Price Hill Creative Community Festival (PHCCF), July 19-20. PHCCF drew more than 1,000 people for two days of free performances, workshops, participatory activities, and food. By featuring the creativity and talents of Price Hill youth, the festival built pride among residents, showed Price Hill in a positive light, and helped build a more connected and inclusive community.

By holding a month-long summer camp with extended hours (9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday) MYCincinnati addressed the need in Price Hill for a safe space during the summer for children to be productive, engaged, and connected to supportive adult mentors. Simultaneously, by pushing its participants to consistently meet and exceed the highest artistic and musical standards, MYCincinnati helped children develop executive functioning skills that enable them to confidently make healthy decisions, both socially and professionally.

MYCincinnati's 2019 Summer Camp was a great success. The camp offered 8 hours of free, daily programming under the guidance of master teaching artists and enthusiastic volunteers. Students selected from a menu of programming options, including orchestra rehearsals, private lessons, sectionals, elective classes in various subjects, and opportunities for collaborative projects with professional artists. Healthy lunch was provided daily, and healthy snacks were given throughout the day. Informal and formal performances were given throughout the camp.
