Fit & Fun Friday
Fit & Fun Friday is a pilot program for kindergarten through 6th grade that focuses on physical and emotional health. During Monday-Thursday program, students receive nutritious snacks and academic help but don't have a consistent opportunity to learn about basic health and wellness. Fit & Fun Friday is expected to allow children to engage in physical activities, enjoy a balanced snack, and learn about self-care from proper hygiene and nutrition to conflict resolution and coping skills. Friday programming represents another 100 hours a year that the Center can keep kids off the streets.
Although not yet halfway through the pilot project, the program is providing great results. Students began the year by taking the 40 Developmental Assets Survey, which revealed gaps in three focus areas: social competencies, empowerment and positive identity. Students also were given fitness and academic tests which will be administered again at the end of the school year. The goal of registering 125 students was exceeded by 50. On average, receive 67 students participate each Friday. After taking 3rd-6th grade students roller skating, forty students attended the following Friday.
