Embedded writers program
WordPlay helps young people discover their voices and tell their stories – to help them understand themselves, their place, and their potential in the world. Through their stories, they write better, self-determined futures for themselves. This happens by nurturing young people’s creativity and potential through personal discovery and art-based skill building programs with reading, writing and storytelling at their core. The support of the Dater Foundation funded a WordPlay program at Aiken High School. Wordplay has been offering programming in collaboration with Aiken for 8 years, with programs focused on creating spaces for creativity, addressing the intersection between personal narrative and media literacy, exploring “compassion in action,” and writing circles dealing with social and emotional skills. Impact is being monitored, and initial surveys are very positive. About 71% of the students in the programs say they “enjoy writing,” 68% say they “feel confident as a writer,” and 87% say they “like working with their WordPlay teaching artist.”
