Teaching Tomorrow’s Audience Today

Since its creation in 1976, School House Symphony has been presenting imaginative multicultural music education programs to pre-school and elementary age children throughout the greater Cincinnati area. These programs feature performances and discussions of music from different cultures and periods of time, including folk, jazz, classical, and popular music. School House Symphony’s formal mission is “to foster both an understanding and appreciation of music from many different cultures and time periods, and to promote an awareness of how music is structured and performed.” SHS presents approximately 300 performances at over 90 different schools. SHS performs in both public and private schools throughout the greater Cincinnati area, presenting a subscription series of concerts throughout the year, with a total attendance of approximately 20,000 children. Funding from the Dater Foundation makes it possible to provide these programs to schools at affordable prices. In addition, Dater funding was also used to provide performances, free of charge, at the eight Cincinnati CISE schools as well as several more qualifying area schools.
