River Explorer and Mussels in the Classroom programs
Ohio River Foundation is a regional conservation organization dedicated to protecting and improving the water quality and ecology of the Ohio River watershed. Its program activities are restoring habitat and educating and training the next generation of environmental stewards. A Dater grant supports participation of thousands of students each year, grades 4-12, in the River Explorer and Mussels in the Classroom (MIC) programs. Students are junior scientists as they increase their understanding of difficult science concepts by engaging in hands-on activities. For River Explorer, they catch fish with seine nets, perform water quality sampling, and examine macroinvertebrates in area rivers, creeks, and streams. For MIC, students observe, monitor, and care for live mussels in a classroom aquarium for two to five weeks. More than 47,000 students have participated in these programs since 2005.
