Teen Artists for Change
Kennedy Heights Arts Center nurtures creativity in youth by providing high-quality arts education programs that are accessible to all in a community-based setting. Teen Artists for Change (TAC) was developed in partnership with teens in the community to empower them to use art as a vehicle for self-expression. To engage more young people and achieve greater impact, TAC created a city-wide online platform for student’s creative voices. In May 2020, TAC launched Tellus, an online magazine by teens, for teens. Tellus is guided by a teen editorial board that consists of 14 diverse high school students. Through Tellus, youth create and share media about topics and issues they care about. Editorial board members and their peers created artwork in the form of photography, video, animations, creative writing and nonfiction writing in response to the theme “In My Element” to be included in the first issue of the zine. The support of the Dater Foundation is enhancing students' ability to use art techniques, materials and processes to communicate ideas, and empowering young people to use their creativity to become agents of change.
