Teaching Children Social-Emotional Skills and Healthy Living
The First Tee of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky (TFT-GCNKY) - $15,000
The First Tee’s outreach programming addresses children’s needs for physical activity and social-emotional learning by providing educational programs that build character, instill life enhancing values and promote healthy choices. The First Tee outreach curricula promote motor skill development and presents golf as a lifelong, health-enhancing recreation, modifying traditional sports—including baseball, football, bowling and tennis—to incorporate the four basic golf shots: putt, chip, pitch and full swing. Each activity empowers young people to explore their abilities and develop health-enhancing behaviors by integrating The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits (Energy, Play, Safety, Vision, Mind, Family, Friends, School, Community). By establishing The First Tee’s Nine Core Values (Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, Judgment), students learn how to apply the core values to other areas of their lives, at home or in the classroom, providing a pathway to college for underserved populations. The Dater Foundation grant helped TFT-GCNKY expand outreach programming by over 70% to serve 11,116 students in 38 elementary schools and 21 program partner locations throughout Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in 2019.
