Education Programs:for 2017-18 and 2018-19
Now in its 125th anniversary season, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops is one of 16 full-time orchestras in the U.S., the sixth oldest orchestra in America, and the oldest in Ohio.
Program Description in 2018-19
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s numerous education programs establish life-long connections with the community while promoting participation in music for more than 80,000 individuals annually. Programs include:
• Young People’s Concerts (YPCs) and Music is the Ticket Subsidy Program: Nearly 18,000 students experience great orchestral music live through Young People’s Concerts field trips.
• Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras (CSYO): The 54-year-old CSYO consists of two ensembles representing 190 players in grades 7-12.
• CSO Educator Network: CSO-led workshops to support teachers’ work using music to affect learning and creativity in students. Sessions include arts integration, instrumental pedagogy, conducting, and other topics. All sessions are free to educators and teachers may be eligible to earn continuing education units (CEUs).
• Sound Discoveries School Residency: CSO Teaching Artists visit classrooms and teach how music integrates with other areas of learning as decided and prioritized by each school.
• Nouveau Pre-Conservatory Program: Nurtures talented orchestra students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in classical music towards achieving professional music careers. Student musicians enjoy free weekly lessons, music theory classes, advising, chamber music coaching, performance opportunities, and financial assistance for summer music study opportunities and college auditions.
• Other programs: The CSO further engages people throughout the region through its Musicians in Schools program, CSO Community Concerts with local high school partners, free community parks concerts, ensemble performances in public venues, the annual Classical Roots concert and outreach activities, and educational lectures pre-concert, at businesses, and community centers.
Specific Program Impact and Results + Dater Foundation Grant
With the support of the Dater Foundation, 83,478 individuals were engaged during 2018-19 season. Over 70% of those reached were students. Of note was the Sound Discoveries residency for third and fourth grade students at Hays-Porter, which provided dozens of hands-on learning activities such as the “Bosebuild kit” that allowed students to construct their own Bose speaker and experiment with sound frequency and waves. Additionally, the CSO accepted nine students in to the Nouveau Pre-Conservatory program in fall 2018 for the 2018-19 academic year. The Dater Foundation’s grant was pivotal in enabling the Orchestra to provide high quality music programming for Cincinnati-area students and educators.
