Democracy and Me
WVXU’s Democracy & Me helps students understand the role journalism plays in our democracy, as well as their responsibilities as citizens. The program includes curriculum for teachers at www.democracyandme.org, mentoring at local high schools, and a student podcast and a media essay competition.
Thanks to support from the Dater Foundation, WVXU hired Julie Coppens as Educational Outreach Coordinator to join curriculum advisor/blogger, Dr. David Childs, Ph.D. Northern Kentucky University, to champion the program.
In 2019, the focus was on engaging students and teachers with Democracy & Me on Twitter; expansion of the Student Voices Competition (essay, video, audio, and artwork); the Democracy & Z student podcast; and workshops for local educators at Union Institute and Gateway Community College.
Democracy & Me also partners with local youth advocates and organizations such as Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, Youth Lead Student Alliance, Young Activists Coalition, YWCA, and Peaslee Neighborhood Center.
