Expansion of docent program
The Cincinnati Observatory Center's mission is to maintain the integrity and heritage of an historic 19th century observatory and to educate, engage, and inspire our community about astronomy and science. We facilitate STEM learning for students Kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as provide classes, tours, and events on the study of astronomy which serve over 35,000 people annually. This includes over 12,000 students from all over the tri-state, and in increasing percentage of students who are under served.
The Dater Foundation supports funding for our Docent position, which is a key full time staff person who answers phones, assists with administrative tasks but the most important and largest part of this job is to greet our thousands of walk in and daytime visitors so they can also experience the Observatory with a tour. Thanks to the Dater Foundation, we are able to continue funding this position which services this growing number of visitors - and we have now instituted a daytime tour schedule as well as begun doing solar viewing for these visitors. This position also assists in welcoming and guiding field trip groups through our museum space as well as showing them our historic domes and telescopes.
