Treehouse Children’s Services
Cancer Family Care is proud to be meeting a need throughout Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky for accessible and beneficial mental health counseling and supportive services that help children, adults, and families cope with and manage a cancer diagnosis and its overwhelming impact in their lives. A Dater Foundation grant supported Treehouse Children's Services, a free year-round program that meets the unique and complex needs of children and youth ages 4-18 who are coping with cancer. Treehouse provides private one-on-one counseling sessions, school-based counseling sessions (one-on-one and/or group sessions with peers), and supplemental programs like Family Connect (facilitating and encouraging improved communication in families when a parent has a current cancer diagnosis) and Camp Courage Youth Day Camp (providing a fun-focused, peer bonding summer camp experience). Treehouse is vital because when cancer strikes children can feel engulfed by complex emotions and feelings, which can negatively affect school performance, family and peer relationships, healthy routines and habits, sleep patterns, self-esteem, and more. Treehouse participants report an increased ability to cope in their daily lives, a decrease in nightmares and other negative symptoms, an improvement in school performance, and positive feelings of being supported. Treehouse serves 500 children each year while also benefitting parents who feel enormous relief for having found specialized mental health support for their child/children during a time of such emotional trauma and upheaval.
