Civic Organization Team Support and Field Trip Funding
Adopt A Class (AAC) connects businesses and civic groups, as mentors, with students in schools with high percentages of poverty. Serving students Pre-K through 8th grade, our program exposes students to a breadth of experiences and careers, while sparking a culture of teamwork among our mentors. Adopters engage with their students one hour, once a month through monthly mentoring visits, educational activities, and field trips with college & career, life skills, and STEM focus areas. Students gain valuable experiences by participating in educational field trips. Though, we understand every adopter may not be able to afford this kind of experience. Thanks to the ongoing support of the Dater Foundation, AAC is pleased to provide a mini-grant program to help adopters cover a portion of their field trip costs. In the 2018-2019 school year, the support of the Dater Foundation funded 21 field trips for approximately 525 students in 32 schools throughout Greater Cincinnati.
A Success Story from Adopt A Class ...
During Career Day at Nielsen, an Adopt A Class adopting organization, students had the opportunity to visit their mentors’ office to learn more about what work they do everyday. The team always likes to cap off the school year with having the students come to visit their offices, which exposes them to career options and real-life work experience, but is also a nice end to the year’s theme in particular, as Nielsen also prides itself on having a diverse workforce.
Thanks to the ongoing support of the Dater Foundation, Adopt A Class was able to provide a mini-grant to fund a portion of Nielsen’s field trip. Nielsen covered their Innovation, Neuroscience, and Games departments. Nielsen has worked with the students throughout the school year to expose them to various countries around the world, and their cultures; each month consisted of activities to bring that country more “to life” for them. Students have experience riding the city bus so Nielsen liked to use that option so the students don’t have to walk the one mile to their office. This year, one of activity included having them make their own snack/candy mix and then create the marketing/advertising for the mix.
The students will also toured of their new Neuroscience labs, getting to see someone actually "hooked up" to the cap while watching an ad! Nielsen also had the Games department included to share details on what their work looks like and answer student questions, as video games are typically very relevant and an interesting topic for many of our students. Thank you to the Dater Foundation for providing such a meaningful, educational experience for the students of Greater Cincinnati.
