Cincinnati, Ohio, June 19, 2015 – Five graduating seniors at Gilbert A. Dater High School in Western Hills are the 2015 recipients of college scholarships provided by the Foundation. This year's winners were announced May 13 at the school's Senior Awards Night.

Scholarship recipients, along with the schools they plan to attend, are:

Samantha Finke – Mt. St. Joseph University (Athletic Training)
Zoe Lee – University of Cincinnati (Mechanical Engineering Technology)
Luis Lorenzo – University of Cincinnati (Engineering)
Jayla Means – University of Cincinnati (Business Marketing)
Tariah Wiley – University of Cincinnati (Psychology)

The scholarship awards are for $2,500 annually and are renewable annually as long as recipients make progress toward graduation. The scholarships are awarded through the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, which selects recipients in consultation with the school.

Before Dater High School existed and graduated its first class, the Foundation gave scholarships totaling $400,000 between 1996 and 2003 to graduating seniors at other high schools who had attended Dater Junior High.  The Foundation has made a $50,000 grant annually since 2004 in providing scholarships to graduating Dater High seniors.  With this year’s grant, this scholarship support now totals $1,000,000.

The scholarship awards continue a long relationship between the Dater Foundation and the school that bears the name of Charles Dater's grandfather Gilbert. When Dater Junior High gave way to Dater Montessori, then-Principal Dr. Beverly Eby convinced the school district to establish a college preparatory school on the west side of Cincinnati. Original plans called for another name, but Dr. Eby enlisted the Foundation's support and the school was allowed to retain the Dater name. The class of 2015 is the school's 12th graduating class.

The Foundation has provided funds to support other programs and initiatives at the school, including a SummerBridge program, college resource center, culinary arts programs, furnishings as part of a recent renovation project, and support to fund incentives and other student activities.  The Foundation donated portraits of Gilbert Dater and Charles Dater, and these paintings hang near the school’s main entrance.
