Creative Expression, Social Justice Education & Mentor Programs for Children and Youth

Grant Application:

This request would support all of Peaslee Neighborhood Center's programs for children and youth, which create access to high quality educational and enrichment opportunities in an area of our city where the need is high, but resources very limited. In addition to sustaining existing programs, this request would support the expansion of a new summer camp classroom, Risers (ages 10-12) allowing us to serve 15 more children than prior to the pandemic.  This request would also support the addition of two youth mentor positions for graduates of our Agents of Change Program to work in our Peaslee Kids (ages 6-9) program for the summer.

Using Peaslee’s holistic approach, based in participatory education, our committed educators focus on the whole person, encouraging both intellectual and emotional learning, and both individual-level and community growth. Art, music, writing, and recreation are essential components of these programs, as well as field trips into our city’s cultural and historical institutions. Participants are encouraged to find their voice and share it with each other, their families, and the general public through readings, exhibiting and/or publishing their work. The upheavals of the pandemic have made these consistently robust and affordable education programs that we offer even more vital for our city's kids and youth.
