Root-Up Cooking and Food Education!
Grant Application:
This grant will also bring an expanded health-focused food education program to 10 underserved Cincinnati K-12 Schools. 300 students will participate in 2 hands-on cooking classes from January 2021 - May 2021. To broaden our impact, we have added home education kits with a curriculum to encourage students’ culinary passions while at home with their families. To measure our impact, we have also added family follow-ups.
Due to coronavirus, our cooking programs have been redesigned to further protect our students and staff. Beginning in January, this program will reach 300 students at 10 Cincinnati Schools, providing 600 high-impact touchpoints, 600 take-home cooking kits, 600 nutrition/recipe books, and 300 follow-ups.
The importance of proper nutrition and strong immune systems are relevant now more than ever. This grant will allow New Leaf Kitchen to provide the skills, knowledge, and tools for children to contribute to their families' health and well-being at home.
Grant Evaluation Report:
We were able to achieve a wonderful partnership with a wonderful community of schools and students. This is just the beginning of our future with food and nutrition classes in CISE schools and every school. We already have plans to be back at Corryville starting in September 2022. They have a small budget for a couple months, but after that we were looking to apply for more funding to continue offering our programs across the CISE schools.
The students' reception and excitement with this opportunity was encouraging and passionate, to say the least. The students looked forward to their cooking classes, and were able to demonstrate how much they learned and knew about each ingredient towards the end of our programs. Students would run up to the teachers setting up for class, excited to hear what we would be cooking that day! Staff reported that many students looked forward to their cooking class day more than any other class day. That excitement and positivity was contagious.
We started to implement a survey system to collect data to measure impact. This is one area I hope to develop more for our next program. Attached is an example of the results from UC pre-med students who worked with our classes and students on surveys and projects. I also have attached letters from the administration, and some pictures. One other area I hope to grow is our social media and news presence. I would love to let even more people know about our programs, our mission, and the foundations that help make it all happen!
