MEAC's Early Literacy Program

Grant Application:

The Madisonville Education and Assistance Center’s (MEAC) Early Literacy Program provides critical early literacy intervention to preschool through third grade students who have demonstrated the greatest need for help. The program has four core components: a school day program for individuals and small groups, an after-school program, a summer literacy camp, and Family Literacy Nights throughout the year. The Early Literacy Program (ELP) serves children and families who live in Madisonville and/or have students who attend John P. Parker School. John  P. Parker is Madisonville's neighborhood school, however there are students from other City of Cincinnati communities. The program uses research-based interventions to supplement the classroom instruction and aligns with Ohio's Common Core standards. ELP families are able to participate in activities that strengthen their children’s reading skills and learn ways to engage their children in reading at home.

Goals:

Early Literacy Program goals for the 2021-2022 Academic Year:
95% will improve their scores on state tests
90% of students will advance to the next grade level
80% will achieve proficiency on the third grade state reading test
Children will demonstrate readiness for Kindergarten
Children will meet developmental milestones in Kindergarten

Grant Evaluation Report:

The largest barrier to success this year was staffing. However with new leadership assessing the program, MEAC realized a few important factors regarding our intended impact and capacity. The last 3 MEAC Literacy Coordinators had all left the program and taken fulltime positions with the Parker School. As a small nonprofit MEAC is not able to competitively recruit and m aintain licensed teaching staff who will work in the schools. Additionally since MEAC began our literacy work with Parker, CPS has made significant and ongoing investments in Literacy Intervention Specialists. These staff do the same work as the MEAC Literacy Coordinator. This challenging time was an oportunity for MEAC to revisit how we could best provide early education and literacy interventions to the community without duplicating existing work. MEAC has decided to shift focus and implement an early intervention home-visiting program Parent Child+ that focuses on young children 16 months to 3 years and their primary caretaker

MEAC can't report on the intended outcomes. We did not have a staff-person in place during the school year. Our Literacy Coordinator transitioned into a fulltime role with our CPS partner, Parker School.
