Fall 2022-Spring 2023 Girls on the Run Scholarships
Grant Application:
GOTR offers
a research-based, 10-week program for girls in grades 3-8, where running is a
foundation providing life lessons that can positively shape girls throughout
their lives. GOTR-trained coaches lead girls through lessons that help them
understand their strengths, their value to themselves and others, and why
healthy relationships are important. Training for our non-competitive
end-of-season 5K is woven into the lessons so girls learn healthy habits and
goal setting. GOTR is answering our communities' needs for social-emotional
learning (SEL) by providing the support girls need during this pandemic, where
isolation and loneliness are exacerbating challenges this age group already
faces. On average, 45% of GOTR participants require financial assistance for
registration fees each season, and almost 25% of our sites are under-served for
extracurricular activities, many needing up to 100% scholarship assistance.
We aim to serve 1000 girls in Fall 2022, and 1200 in Spring 2023. A grant award of $20,000 from the Dater Foundation will be used to cover full registration fees and programming expenses for 120 girls, up to eight full teams, with financial need. In addition to the research-based curriculum, each girl receives new running shoes, a program shirt, 5K registration, a healthy snack at each lesson, a community impact project experience, and a team celebration.
GOTR staff will evaluate 5K completion records, participant registration data, as well as complete site observations and solicit coach feedback.
1. As a result of this financial support, 120 girls will be able to complete the program in Fall 2022/Spring 2023. GOTR staff will utilize participant registration data to evaluate this outcome, i.e. demographic and financial data.
2. Of the 120 girls who participate in the program, 85% will train for and complete a 5K, tracked by lesson and 5K attendance rates.
3. Post-season surveys will be sent to guardians and coaches for feedback on girls' SEL progress, specifically regarding increased levels of confidence, a deeper understanding of care and compassion (for themselves, each other, and their community), and increased rates of physical activity.
Grant Evaluation Report:
We have been very successful in delivering to our goals we set out to achieve. We are confident that we have provided quality training and resources for our coaches and in turn have provided invaluable, life-changing programming to hundreds of girls in the Greater Cincinnati area. Our opportunity is to continue to grow our outreach so we can impact a greater number of girls. With the support of partners like The Charles Dater Foundation, we can achieve this goal.
