Girl Scout Leadership Experience: Community Outreach Program and Camp for Every Girl Initiative
Grant Application:
GSWO is requesting a $25,000 grant from the Charles H. Dater Foundation to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience: Community Outreach Program and Camp for Every Girl Initiative. These programs will engage more than 3,125 underserved girls in the Greater Cincinnati region including Brown, Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren Counties. Girl Scouts of Western Ohio will reach girls through in-school and afterschool programs in Title-1 schools, school break day camps, staff-led Girl Scout troops, virtual programs, and Girl Scout resident camp, all provided at no cost. As a result of their participation in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls in grades K-12 will improve their academic success, gain critical interpersonal and social skills, and become girl leaders who will give back to their communities.
The goal of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is to encourage girls to discover themselves and their passions, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. In order to achieve this goal, the following objectives have been set:
1. GSWO will engage more than 2,525 girls in community outreach programs including in-person and virtual series, staff-led Girl Scout troops, and school break day camps.
2. GSWO will partner with more than 50 schools and community partner agencies to offer the community outreach program in-person and virtually.
3. GSWO will make camp a possibility for 600 Girl Scouts by providing them with fully subsidized resident and troop camping experiences; camp scholarships; and virtual camp opportunities.
For the grant period, GSWO has set the following program outcome goals:
1. 74% of girls will demonstrate a strong sense of self. They will have confidence in themselves and their abilities. They will form positive identities.
2. 45% of girls will demonstrate challenge-seeking behaviors. They will learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes.
3. 51% of girls will develop healthy relationships. They will learn how to resolve conflicts constructively and communicate their feelings directly.
Grant Evaluation Report:
We are pleased with our outcomes on these programs for summer 2022 and the start of the 2023 school year. Being back in schools and able to reach girls leaves us confident that we will achieve even more success as this school year finishes.
Results:
1. Since June 2022, when this grant was awarded, we have served 1,311 girls via direct delivery programs in schools and community partner locations. Last summer, 30 Cincinnati-area girls were able to attend overnight camp through the Camp For Every Girl initiative.
2. In the Cincinnati region, we partner with approximately 40 Title I schools each year. Additionally, we partner with at least 25 community partners each year.
3. We had 1,685 girls attend overnight camp Girl Scouts with 248 receiving fully subsidized resident and troop camping experiences and camp scholarships.
For the grant period, GSWO achieved the following program outcome goals:
1. 68% of girls reported a strong sense of self, indicating confidence in themselves and their abilities and forming positive identities.
2. 65% of girls reported the ability to want to seek challenges - learning to take appropriate risks, trying things even if they might fail, and learning from their mistakes.
3. 58% of girls reported being able to develop healthy relationships. This includes how to resolve conflicts constructively and communicate their feelings directly.
