General Operating Support

The Community Meal Center's mission is to offer a safe and dignified haven in the community where a hot meal can be shared.  Anyone in need can enjoy a hot, homemade meal.  The focus is on meeting some of the social, physical and spiritual needs of the homeless, the working poor and the hungry.  Founded in 2001, the Center serves an average of 350 meals to 150 guests on Friday and Monday (last one of month) evenings at two locations, Zion Lutheran and Power Source Churches.  Guests may have as many helpings as they want.  On most Fridays, volunteer entertainers contribute their musical talents to the evening experience.   On various occasions, free haircuts, chair massages, manicures, education, and a nurse and assistants for free foot care are offered.  CMC partners with various schools and has a student servant leadership training program in which many high school and college students meet their service-learning requirements.  A Dater grant helped fund the purchase of food and supplies and covered almost half the organization's annual expenses.  The volunteer force of servers and cooks is made up of scout troops, students (college, high and grade school), church members, and often dinner guests of the Center.  CMC continues to share harvested food and other resources with many other local free meal programs.  While concerned about growing social service needs, CMC is glad to have a viable model and be able to work together to serve members of the community who are in need.
