Outreach Tour to Schools and Community Centers

ROKCincy brings the thrill of live performance to schools and community centers all over the Greater Cincinnati area as a free service. ROKCincy’s mission is to offer young people a foundation to understand and appreciate performing arts as audience members while offering local artists practical experience. A Dater grant supported ROKCincy’s tour of “The Barber of Seville” which reached 27 schools and community centers and over 5,300 audience members. When schools closed in March, ROKCincy put the tour on hold for the safety of audiences and musicians. The plan is to restart performances in January of 2022 when it is anticipated that schools will be safe and ready. While on hold, ROKCincy promoted a video of a past performance.

The pause also provided time to imagine what future engagement with interactive opportunities might be and how to address how performances can better accommodate people with different abilities and sensory sensitivities. This last effort was in response to an amazing moment at one of the last performances. A young girl with profound hearing loss asked to feel the singers singing. The singers enthusiastically lined up to allow the girl to put her hands on their backs and chests to feel the vibrations made by their voices. It was an utterly unique and unforgettable experience.
