Violence prevention and intervention services for youth in Cincinnati, Ohio

Joe Torre Safe At Home was founded in 2002 by baseball legend Joe Torre and his wife, Ali. Joe grew up in a home with domestic violence. As he grew older and came to terms with his experience, he wanted to ensure that no child grew up as he did – feeling alone and afraid. The goal of Safe At Home is to address the nationwide crisis of violence: 60% of American children have experienced violence in their homes, schools, and communities. Without early intervention, the resulting trauma can cause devastating long-term effects. Without education and prevention, the cycle can continue through the generations. Safe At Home currently has 20 locations in Los Angeles, California; Union City, New Jersey; New York City and Westchester County, New York; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Safe At Home provides intervention and prevention services in a school-based setting to children exposed to violence and abuse, helping them find healing, hope, and empowerment. The 2019-2020 Dater Foundation grant supported Safe At Home’s signature Margaret’s Place program at Riverview East Academy in Cincinnati. The program provides clinical counseling to youth exposed to violence and abuse, and a series of prevention programming for youth, parents/caregivers, and school staff.

Through the support of the Dater Foundation grant, Safe At Home provided the following services during the 2019-2020 program year at Riverview East Academy: 231 individual counseling sessions and 30 group counseling sessions, for a total combined reach of 93 youth; 7 cycles (31 sessions) of our Youth Empowered to Speak prevention curriculum, reaching 117 youth; 14 topical violence prevention workshops, reaching 212 youth; 3 staff workshops and 2 parent/caregiver workshops, reaching 140 adults; 31 peer leadership meetings, reaching 13 youth; and 5 awareness campaigns, reaching 593 youth and 20-30 adults.

In an impact assessment of the 2019-2020 program year of participants in counseling: 75% reported using more positive and safe coping skills after having participated; over 83% reported trying techniques that the Margaret’s Place Counselor suggested; nearly 83% reported attending class more; 75% overwhelmingly reported doing better in school; and over 83% reported being more likely to stand up for others in need.

The COVID-19 pandemic did disrupt services in March of 2020; clinical counseling was suspended for the remainder of the school year, but resumed in September 2020 in a virtual/hybrid format. All other services were only briefly disrupted due to the transition to virtual schooling, before resuming within 3-4 weeks. In spite of the pandemic and its intensely negative impact on our participants – including their safety and wellbeing – staff were able to overwhelmingly meet targets to provide support to youth in need at Riverview East Academy in Cincinnati.
