Academic Intervention

Inner City Youth Opportunities mission is to educate and mentor low-income Cincinnati inner city youth year-round by providing a safe environment and programs to prepare them for a successful future. ICYO focuses on narrowing the education gap and providing critical developmental skills. Since 1993, thousands of children have benefited from After School Homework Assistance and Academic Tutoring (Academic Intervention), Emphasis on Early Childhood Literacy, Steve Spangler Science Kits, summer tennis camp & other community sponsored summer camps (Camp Ernst, Camp Joy, Cincinnati Nature Camp, New Day Ranch) and Year-Round Field Trips, Gardening at a Gorman Heritage Farm plot and a Teaching Kitchen emphasizing healthy cooking. ICYO provides all programs plus meals and transportation at no cost to our families.

A grant from the Dater Foundation helped provide resources for ICYO children to continue to receive academic help through virtual tutoring since in person Academic Intervention was not possible due to COVID-19. UC volunteers from Sigma Chi and Pi Beta Phi assisted students along with about twenty Mason High School volunteers. Scholastic grade level books, Scholastic Newsletters, Poetry books, Spectrum Math books, Bob Books and Workbooks and if needed food and technology were purchased and individual tutoring lesson plans along with books were mailed to all students.
