2020 Deaf Children’s Programs Hearing Speech + Deaf Center has roots in 1925. The founding charter of its predecessor organization, the Cincinnati League for the Hard of Hearing, recognized the need for social, educational, and recreational opportunities for its members. The Dater Foundation's support of the Deaf Youth Programs for building social-emotional health in deaf and hard-of-hearing youth recognizes those needs continue.

Isolation and loneliness often accompany hearing loss. Ninety percent of children with hearing disorders are born to hearing families who may not know anyone else who is deaf. Dater-supported programs promote opportunities for making connections and building socialization skills that can ward off the loneliness that deaf and hard of hearing kids confront.

Even with COVID-19, the programs achieved remarkable success. Virtual Signing Summer Camp replaced the in-person day camp that originated in 2014, but attendance was unaffected. Deaf Day at the Zoo moved from May to October, and the Zoo reported that the event achieved the second largest attendance of the season. A crowd of more than 200 enjoyed learning about animals' habits from the teams of Zoo staffers and ASL interpreters stationed around the grounds. The pandemic even affected Santa's approach to gift distribution for the deaf and hard of hearing kiddos on his "Nice List." While Signing Santa connected with children via Zoom, teams of his elves made contactless deliveries all over town.
