Catch Every Child (Jan- Dec 2020)

Envision Children (EC), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency in Cincinnati, Ohio devoted to helping underserved children achieve academic excellence through engaging and hands-on activities. Envision Children’s mission is to provide underserved students with supplemental educational instruction in science, technology, engineering, math, reading and critical thinking that will allow them to excel academically.

The Catch Every Child (CEC) initiative provides out-of-school programs and private tutoring designed to increase the academic performance of students who are primarily African American or Latino. Many of these students also come from families with incomes below the Federal Poverty Level.

This population of students is currently underserved and  the CEC initiative strives to improve academic performance. Quantitative data is gathered from the school partner, Northwest Local School District and includes Ohio Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) test data, which evaluates student performance in reading and math.

Catch Every Child (CEC) is comprised of 5 core programs. The Extended Day Program (EDP) provides small group tutoring before and after school to students in grades 1-5, focusing on math and reading. The EDP runs four days weekly for 60-90 minutes daily. On Saturdays, pre-school and kindergarten students participate in the Kindergarten Challenge (KC). The KC enhances the primary skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and 1st grade during the upcoming academic year. Two 2-hour sessions are offered each Saturday. During the summer, EC operates the Academic Summer Enrichment Program (ASEP), an 8-week educational day camp. Classes are provided Monday-Friday for 6 hours daily, for pre-K to 5th grade. Morning instruction emphasizes reading and math; afternoon classes emphasize STEM activities.

In 2020-21, a record number of students were helped by CEC ... over 800 students (up almost 25%) This total included a new high for students attending the Academic Summer Enrichment Program (325 students)

The past year of providing services during a pandemic was very challenging.  It required the organization to be nimble and be able to adapt to constantly changing health protocols. Led by grants from the Charles H. Dater and Greater Cincinnati Foundations, Envision Children was able to provide eight months of private tutoring to 350 students from Cincinnati Public Schools who attended virtual classes at Cincinnati Recreation Commission centers.
