Literacy, GED and Job Skills Instruction

The East End Adult Education Center has been turning around lives for 48 years. With its doors closed in March of 2020 due to COVID, its educational program was made available to students online. Many students worked online in the spring and summer. Doors opened for in person tutoring in September. Last school year, EEAEC served 181 students, with 76 students in the educational program, 20 GED graduates and 105 students in the computer lab. The computer lab served enrolled students and students from the community. In the computer lab, students worked on resume writing, college applications, on line job applications, essay writing and GED practice tests as well as the official GED Test. The students that passed the GED Test worked very hard and achieved their goals, so they could go on to college or better jobs. The majority of these students were the first members of their families to graduate from high school.  Students ranged in age from 16 to 70 and were all at different levels of educational ability. The majority of students had Learning Disabilities. Two teachers with Masters of Education in Special Education/Learning Disabilities degrees worked with students. Every student who attended regularly improved their educational abilities and job readiness skills. EEAEC continued to see young adults that had dropped out of the regular school system, due to learning disabilities, learning issues, health problems, poverty, and family problems.  Most of these students worked at their ability level and finally began to succeed.  Job schedules were accommodated by offering day and night classes. As EEAECwe touched the lives of our students it was readily apparent that without a high school diploma or GED Diploma the door to opportunity is closed. Graduates were encouraged to go on to further education, and many opted for that. All students were from low economic families, and the goal is that education will lift them out of poverty and keep them out of jail.  Most students had never had a good experience in school. The focus is on changing that mindset from the first daythe first day.
