Stempower

Cincinnati Public Schools is proud to partner with Cincinnati Woman’s Club to provide Stempower, a three-year preparatory program designed to empower high school girls to pursue their STEM interests into college and career. Given the school district’s focus on equity and its mission that aims to prepare students for life, Stempower is right on target. Thanks to the Dater Foundation grant, Stempower is underway, working to offset national workforce demographics that indicate STEM fields will benefit from greater diversity.

Mentoring is a significant feature of Stempower. During the pandemic, Stempower participants were supported through video conferencing and email communications, by mentors who have a wide breadth of backgrounds and work experiences. Mentors include school teachers, principals, engineers, business owners, physicians and librarians, as well as community and business executives.

Summer 2021 will bring a 2-day program that provides introductions to upcoming STEM AP classes the girls will take. During the summer program, the girls will have direct interaction with mentors and a chance to talk with other students about challenges of the past year and paths to success in the coming year.  When the program culminates, aspiring girls who have completed the 3-year Stempower program, and are accepted to college, will receive a special Cincinnati Woman’s Club scholarship award.
