Diplomas to Degrees (d2D #reLaunch)
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati (BGCGC) has been serving our local, at-risk youth for over 80 years, with a mission of enabling all young people, especially those who need help most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
By providing after-school and weekend programming across seven club sites, BGCGC ensures its 2,400 disadvantaged kids are growing and developing through its three program pillars - Graduate, Fit for Life, and Ready to Serve. Additionally, throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and in its wake, the organization overhauled technology infrastructure and implemented mental-health programs.
The Diplomas to Degrees (d2D #reLaunch) program, a sub-chapter of the Graduate pillar, is a nationally developed framework that prepares disadvantaged young members for trade school, community college, or a four-year university. Supported by the Dater Foundation, d2D #reLaunch is closing the achievement gap by implementing hands-on workshops with a curriculum focused on pragmatic knowledge including: the application process, exploring financial aid, career exploration (with a focus on learning the components of a skilled trade), and workforce readiness.
Unfortunately, #reLaunch and the entire after-school curriculum was interrupted by Covid-19. In response, BGCGC expanded hours to 7:30am-5:00pm and restructured curriculum to become a virtual school, serving 32 students per site (due to social distancing requirements) to ensure they had the supervision, materials, and access to their virtual schoolwork. At this time, the organization has returned to running its typical, after-school programming regiment, including the running of #reLaunch, and expects gradually returning to full capacity through the 2021 calendar year.
