Program: Youth Employment Program ArtWorks is an award-winning Greater Cincinnati nonprofit whose mission is to transform people and places through investments in creativity.  With a grant from the Dater Foundation, ArtWorks was able to hire 123 youth, ages 14-21, at a living wage to create transformational works of art through a mentorship of professional artists. Young people learn best by doing, especially with the support of caring mentors and peers. All ArtWorks Youth Apprentices receive mentoring, experiential on-the-job learning, and professional development opportunities to gain workplace skills, also known as career capacities, in the following social and emotional learning areas for career readiness: communication, collaboration, social capital, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, and goal orientation. In 2020, ArtWorks had a five-to-one ratio of apprentices to teaching artists, ensuring apprentices receive highly attentive mentorship. In 2020, ArtWorks’ season of New Voices, highlighted our work in collaborating with emerging artists and community members to bring their artistic vision to life, presenting new perspectives for public art throughout our region. With the help of apprentices and artists, ArtWorks completed 1,300 works of art, including 63 permanent public art installations and 700 handcraft face masks. ArtWorks is proud to have completed its 200th mural in 2020 with Time Saved vs. Time Served, at 235 W. Court Street, led by Tyra Patterson, Russell Craig, Jayme Santini and completed by two teaching artists and eight youth apprentices. This mural depicts Cincinnati-area women who have returned home from the criminal justice system to become leaders. It seeks to break down the stigma surrounding those with criminal records who have re-entered society.
