Teaching Artist Program (TAP)

Visionaries + Voices (V+V) Education Department's Teaching Artist Program (TAP) is one of V+V's three program areas in its mission to support artists with disabilities. The other two programs are the studio program and the exhibition program.

TAP provides the skills necessary for a V+V artist to go into the community and teach about his or her creative technique/s at schools and community organizations and gatherings.  TAP does not replace a school's art curriculum, but rather provides complimentary art instruction.  The students/adults taking classes benefit from the delivery of new art material and perhaps, more importantly, from seeing disability in a new light … individuals with disabilities who are productive members of the community from whom everyone can learn something new.  Students in the class with disabilities also benefit from seeing new role models that show a disability does not have to be a hindrance to success.  V+V artists benefit from enhanced self-esteem and from the financial teaching stipend.

A grant from the Dater Foundation allowed for increased teaching stipends and helped cover expenses (V+V education department personnel, travel, art materials and supplies etc.) necessary to facilitate the teaching opportunities.  Some of the schools and community organizations where TAP artists taught in the 2018-19 school year included Oyler School (CPS in Lower Price Hill), Rees E. Price Academy (CPS in Price Hill), Riverview East Academy (CPS in the East End), Mercy Montessori (private in Walnut Hills), Kilgour Elementary (CPS in Mt. Lookout), The Children's Home, and Stepping Stones.
