Dater Foundation Awards Eight Grants in August, $1.8 Million for 2014-15 Fiscal Year

Cincinnati, Ohio, September 10, 2015 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded eight grants totaling $87,500 in August, concluding its 2014-15 fiscal year having made 126 grants totaling $1,820,618.  Over $39 million in grants have been made to more than 400 nonprofit organizations in the Foundation’s 30 years of existence. 

Grants made in August:

Adopt A Class Foundation, $10,000.  Employee groups at companies and other organizations adopt a class/classroom and provide students with mentoring support and field trips.

Art Academy of Cincinnati, $10,000.  The Community Education After-School Program incorporates art fundamentals with academic curriculum to provide free, enriching classes to nearly 4,000 at-risk elementary students.  

ArtWorks, $10,000.  The Youth Apprentice Program employs up to 200 diverse youth, ages 14-21, to work alongside local professional artists and creative entrepreneurs to produce 15-20 arts related throughout the community each year. 

Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, $7,500.  Collaboration with MYCincinnati to introduce young people ages 7-13 in East Price Hill to a structured instrumental classical music program. 

Cincinnati Observatory Center, $10,000.  Initial support for the addition of a third education position to allow the Center to expand its youth outreach and to respond to increasing demand for programming.

DePaul Cristo Rey High School, $15,000. The college guidance and college support program helps students and their families prepare for college, and the program follows DPCR graduates throughout their college careers and continues to provide support.

Family Nurturing Center, $10,000.  The Kids on the Block program includes a Bullies and School Safety Program and educates children about what constitutes bullying, promotes sensitivity toward peers, provides specific strategies to make schools a safer place, and helps children avoid or cope with bad situations.

Magnified Giving, $15,000. High school students at over 50 area schools to learn the importance, benefits and process of philanthropy by evaluating and making grants to non-profit organizations.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more nearly 2,600 grants totaling since its inception in 1985.
