Cincinnati, Ohio, May 12, 2015 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 10 grants totaling $135,000 in April, including a $10,000 first-time grant to Girls on the Run to fund scholarships for about 60 underserved participants to comprise six new teams.

The 12-week programs for girls in Grades 3-5 and 6-8 is designed to allow girls to recognize their inner strength and define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

The curriculum encourages positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.  Girls develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences, starting with understanding of who they are and what’s important to them and then learning the importance of team work and healthy relationships.

Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health.  At the end of each three month session, girls participate in a celebratory, non-competitive 5k run.  Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible is possible.

Grants made in April:

Children’s Home of Cincinnati, $10,000.  Camp-I-Can, an enriching and structured 10-week summer day camp that provides activities, field trips and academic programs for underprivileged children ages five to 12 who would otherwise be unsupervised while their parents are at work.

Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, $50,000.  College scholarships for graduating seniors at Gilbert A. Dater High School in Western Hills. This continues annual support that began in 1996 with scholarships to graduating seniors who had attended Dater Junior High and shifted with support to Dater High School with its first graduating class in 2003.  Scholarship awards over the years total $1,000,000.

Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, $10,000. Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates provides at-risk youth with the essential knowledge, training, foundational employability skills and business resources necessary to ensure successful, retainable employment.

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, $10,000.  Educational outreach through development of additional pathways to participation that engage girls in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in non-traditional ways.

Girls on the Run, $10,000.  A Dater grant will provide scholarships for underserved girls to participate in this program that teaches life lessons using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Kenton County Public Library Foundation, $5,000. The Penguin Project is a partnership that includes the Library, Kenton County’s Erlanger/Elsmere School District and the WAVE Foundation. Second and third graders learning about penguins get high-impact benefit from the visit of a live penguin.

St. Vincent DePaul, Covington, $10,000.  The Sweet Dreams Bed Program follows up in-home visits by volunteers and provides a twin bed to economically disadvantaged children and youth.

One Way Farm of Fairfield, $10,000.  The Animal Education and Therapy Program uses the unconditional love of animals to provide comfort and support to abused and at-risk children.

People Working Cooperatively, $10,000. The Summer Student Service Group Project provides supervision and resources in leveraging the one-week time contribution of young philanthropist volunteers as they work on projects that further PWC’s goal of helping keep elderly people in their homes.

Urban Health Project (University of Cincinnati Foundation on behalf of Center for Community Engagement), $10,000.  Medical students spend their only open summer working full-time in internships at non-profit organizations, where they gain an increased understanding of the social factors that impact healthcare.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $38 million since its inception in 1985.
