Cincinnati, Ohio, April 9, 2015 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded six grants totaling $65,000 in March, including a $15,000 grant for Crayons to Computers for its Mobile Outreach Program.

Begun in 1997, Crayons supplies free school supplies for teachers to dispense to students in need.  The recently-added mobile outreach truck takes supplies to teachers in outlying areas who cannot get to the organization’s Bond Hill headquarters. Over 1,500 teachers and 23,000 K-12 students benefited in 2014.

Grants made in March:

Against the Grain, $5,000.  Volunteer mentors work with inner city students who demonstrate an ability to succeed, providing academic support during the week and introducing them to service learning opportunities and sharing life lessons at a weekly “family dinner” on weekends.

Cincinnati Recreation Commission, $10,000. RiverTrek is a week-long program of self-discovery and team building for teens ages 12-17 that features a supervised five-day, four-night 65-mile canoe trip along the Little Miami River.

Crayons to Computers, $15,000. The Mobile Outreach Program expands Crayons outreach and serves teachers who face geographic, time and access barriers to participate in the free school supplies program.

Paiges Princess Foundation, $5,000.  Volunteers raise funds and make small grants to children with disabilities.  One program provides bags filled with fine motor skills adaptive equipment (therapy putty, adaptive scissors and pencils, raised paper, beads, etc.) for use as a part of home therapy.

Price Hill Will, $10,000.  The MYCincinnati program uses music to promote social change and youth development in Price Hill through a free, daily orchestra program during the school year.  A summer camp program will expand to five weeks in 2015 and serve 250 young people.

Xavier University - $20,000.  Summer service internship program that fosters young people’s commitment to community service by placing 20 college students in full-time internships at non-profit organizations.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $38 million since its inception in 1985.
