Dater Foundation Awards Nine Grants in February

Cincinnati, Ohio, March 9, 2015 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded nine grants totaling $160,000 in February, including continued support of Camp Joy’s week-long resident camp and other programs for young people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit.

Over 2,000 youth ages 7-16 from at-risk backgrounds participate in hands on, outdoor learning experiences, gaining self-esteem and interpersonal skills such as teamwork in the process. Camp Joy’s ropes course is a highlight. Other activities include arts and crafts, swimming, and forest ecology.

Grants made in February:

East End Adult Education Center, $10,000.  Free GED education and job skills instruction that targets young people and adults who have dropped out of school and need credentials to improve their opportunity for success in life.

Faces Without Places, $10,000.  Yellow Bus Summer Camp is a free, seven-week academic and enrichment program for homeless children ages 5-12. 

The Greater Cincinnati Foundation: Learning Links, $40,000. A program that funds small grants to teachers and other educators allowing them to provide creative programs or special events for more than 30,000 area students.

The Greater Cincinnati Foundation: Summertime Kids, $30,000. A program administered through a volunteer committee enabling local nonprofit organizations to provide summer activities such as field trips, day camps, gardening, arts and crafts for deserving young people.

Camp Joy, $10,000.  Program for underserved youth that enables economically-disadvantaged children to participate in fun, safe outdoor activities that promote development of self-esteem, social skills and decision making through a resident camp, an overnight weekend retreat, a leadership program or a school visit.
 
Junior Achievement of OKI Partners, $10,000.  Building on Success Phase II continues the use of  JA’s time-tested programs to show an original and now second cohort of at-risk young people how their K-12 education can lead them toward greater career opportunities and earning potential.

Special Olympic Hamilton County, $10,000.  The Summer  Games at Ohio State University is a culmination of local training and local competitions in track and field events for 125 young people with significant cognitive disabilities.

Taft Museum of Art, $30,000. Educational programs for children and families, including school tours, Arts Reaching Classrooms, Third Sunday Funday, a Girl Scout program, and Summer Art Day Camp.  Activities impact more than 5,000 children and many programs take place in the Taft’s Dater Education Room.

YWCA of Greater Cincinnati, $10,000. Rosie’s Girls is a three-week summer program that introduces girls ages 11-13 to construction and STEM-related careers that can build self-esteem, confidence, and cooperation and leadership skills by applying basic lessons learned in the technical trades.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $38 million since its inception in 1985.
