Dater Foundation Awards Eight Grants in July

Cincinnati, Ohio, August 27, 2014 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded eight grants totaling $ 100,000 at its July board meeting, including $15,000 to the Cincinnati Art Museum for its wide array of Family Learning programs that benefit over 10,000 young people each year.

Grants made in July:

Bethany House Services, $15,000.  Nutrition, Health and Safety Program providing motivation, education and role modeling for homeless mothers and children to help them combat chronic illness, disease and injury prevention prevention,and unhealthy lifestyle.

Cincinnati Art Museum, $15,000. Family Learning at the Museum, including Artworld, Art in the Making, Baby Tours, Family ARTventures, Family First Saturday, Summer Camp, Teen Advisory Board, Art + Design Teen Workshops  and Wee Wednesday outreach to young people throughout the community.

DePaul Cristo Rey High School, $15,000.  Startup funding for a state-required art program that will focus on technology in the visual arts.  The school is known for its work-study program in which students gain valuable exposure to a workplace environment and earn a substantial portion of their tuition.

Gilbert A. Dater High School, $10,000.  Momentum Summer Bridge Program to provide summer enrichment and transition support to youngsters moving to the seventh and ninth grades.

Economics Center (carry over), $15,000.  Funding for the Student Enterprise Program (StEP). Students learn real-world applications of economics principles as they set up their own mini-economy in their classroom, save and invest their “school cash,” and create and sell goods and services at Market Madness. The Center is part of the University of Cincinnati and focuses on education and research.

Granny’s Garden School, $10,000.  Expansion of school summer programs, including daily Garden Adventure sessions over nine weeks and the Garden School’s Kidsfest that involves more than 500 young people.

Kennedy Heights Arts Center, $10,000,  Partners in Art is a new program for teens in grades 7-12 and expands the center’s community outreach to provide an often-neglected age group through comprehensive art instruction that can be applied in collaborative public art projects. 

Stepping Stones, $10,000.  Saturday Kids Club provides extracurricular activities for children ages five to 16 whose disabilities prevent them from participating fully in typical after-school activities, and Saturday Young Adults offers late-afternoon and early evening social opportunities for similarly disabled young people. 
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,300 grants totaling over $37 million since its inception in 1985.
